The Reformatory Chapter One

I’ve just finished reading the first chapter. It is most definitely intriguing. Some questions: why is there an empty mason jar prior to the title page? How did Robbie’s mother die? Why was Robbie’s father run out of town? Does Lyle have genuine interest in Gloria, or is he just using his position as a white boy to seduce and ruin her? They grew up playing together, so either is possible. Most likely he is genuinely interested, but he knows that he can never truly be with her in the light of day due to prejudice and racism. I am curious if we are going to see anymore about Gloria and Lyle, because sh*t is about to hit the fan as Lyle’s daddy saw Robbie kick Lyle. This is most definitely a chapter that pulls the reader in and hopefully prepares us for much more. The cover has a quote from NPR stating this was one of the best books of 2023, so I have high hopes.

I’ll make sure to give you spoiler warnings as I read on, but this is just the first chapter and we already know Robbie kicks Lyle from the back cover. If you don’t read the blurbs, well… you’re weird (stay weird, my friend!).

Happy reading!
